Introduction

The UPS Network Management Card (NMC) supports both wired Ethernet and wireless Wi-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi can be used for temporary direct access during setup or for ongoing monitoring and management when Ethernet is not available. This article provides step-by-step instructions to configure Wi-Fi access and secure the connection.

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to enabling Wi-Fi access on the UPS NMC, and configuring Wi-Fi network settings (Direct Connect, Personal, or Enterprise modes). This also allows the end user to secure wireless communication with proper authentication and encryption.

Procedure

1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct Connect

Wi-Fi Direct Connect allows short-term access from a mobile device or laptop for configuration.

Press and quickly release the reset button on the back of the NMC.

Confirm the green LED is flashing, indicating Wi-Fi Direct mode is active.

From your device, connect to the SSID:

Network ID: Panduit-ups-nmc-[MAC]

Default password: adminadmin

Open a browser and go to https://192.168.5.1
 to access the Web GUI.

Note: Wi-Fi Direct is active for 10 minutes by default.

2. Configure Wi-Fi Network Settings

After logging into the Web GUI:

Navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi Settings.

Choose the connection type:

Wi-Fi Direct Connect – short-term access (default).

Wi-Fi Personal Security – WPA2-Personal with passphrase authentication.

Wi-Fi Enterprise Security – WPA2-Enterprise with RADIUS authentication.

Enter the required credentials (SSID, passphrase, or RADIUS server details).

Save settings and confirm connection to your wireless LAN.

3. Apply Security Best Practices

Change the default Wi-Fi password immediately after first login.

Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption where supported.

Restrict access via firewall rules if the UPS is on a shared wireless network.

For enterprise environments, prefer WPA2-Enterprise with RADIUS authentication for stronger security

Troubleshooting

1. Unable to connect to Wi-Fi Direct:

Ensure you pressed the reset button briefly (not holding it down, which initiates a factory reset).

Check the green LED is flashing.

2. Browser shows certificate warning:

This is expected with the self-signed certificate. Click Advanced > Proceed or install a trusted CA certificate via the Web GUI.

3. Lost Wi-Fi password or credentials:

Connect via Ethernet or serial to reconfigure Wi-Fi settings.

4. NMC not joining the Wi-Fi network:

Verify SSID and passphrase are correct.

Check if your network requires WPA2-Enterprise; configure RADIUS properly.

Ensure the UPS is within Wi-Fi signal range.
