Rack Access Handle Not Responding to Card Swipe
Contents
Introduction
The Panduit Security Handle (ACF05/ACF06) provides electronic access control for server cabinets, supporting RFID cards, keypad PIN codes, or dual authentication. When the handle fails to respond to authorized card swipes, it can prevent critical access to equipment. This issue may occur due to card compatibility, configuration mismatches, authentication mode settings, or hardware limitations. Understanding the G6 PDU's rack access control system architecture is essential for rapid troubleshooting.Purpose
This article guides data center technicians through systematic troubleshooting of Panduit Security Handle card reader failures. It covers card type verification, proper card enrollment procedures, authentication mode configuration, and system limitations to restore cabinet access control functionality while maintaining security compliance
Procedure
Step 1: Verify System Configuration and Limitations
Check Handle Count (Page 94)
Maximum 2 handles per G6 PDU controller
Navigate to: Settings → Rack Access Control
Verify both handles appear if two installed
Confirm Total Sensor Count (Page 94, Table)
Each ACF05/ACF06 handle contains 2 onboard sensors
G6 PDU maximum: 8 sensors total
Calculate current usage:
ACF05/ACF06: 2 sensors each
ACF11: 4 sensors
ACF10: 2 sensors
Individual: 1 sensor each (EA001, ACA01, etc.)
Verify Work Mode Setting (Page 98)
Navigate to: Rack Access Control → Actions → Rack Access Settings
Check current Work Mode:
RFID Only: Card swipe only
Keypad Only: PIN only (no card reader active)
Dual Authentication: Card + PIN required
Step 2: Determine and Verify Card Compatibility
Check Supported Card Types (Page 105, Table)
Handle ModelMIFARE Classic 1kMIFARE Plus 2kMIFARE DESFire 4kHID iCLASSHID 125kHz ProxEM 125kHz ProxACF05/ACF06UIDUIDUID-CSNCSN
UID = Unique Identifier
CSN = Card Serial Number
Dash (-) = Not supported
Test Card Detection
Present card to reader (top of handle)
Check for LED response (Status LED table, page 104)
Red blinking 3 times = Authentication error
Step 3: Retrieve Card ID from Event Logs
Generate Card Swipe Event (Page 96)
Swipe unregistered card at handle
Note exact time of swipe
Check Event Logs
Navigate to: Logs → Event Log
Look for recent entry: "Unauthorized card swipe"
Document the Card ID number shown in message
Example: "Unauthorized card swipe: 1234567890"
Step 4: Add Card to System
Access Card Management (Page 96-97)
Navigate to: Rack Access Control → Actions → Add Card
Configure Card Access
Username: [Identifier for user]
Card ID: [Number from event log]
PIN: [If Dual Auth mode, 4-8 digits]
User Type: Permanent / Temporary
Start Time: [If temporary]
Expire Time: [If temporary]
Save Configuration
Click Save
Maximum 200 cards per cabinet (Page 96)
Step 5: Configure Handle-Specific Settings
Aisle Configuration (Page 98)
Navigate to: Rack Access Settings
Aisle Control options:
Hot/Cold Combined: Either handle unlocks both
Hot/Cold Standalone: Independent operation
Set Timing Parameters
AutoLock Time: [Seconds until auto-lock]
Door Open Time: [Seconds before door open alert]
Max Door Open: [Seconds before critical alarm]
Physical DIP Switch (Page 95)
Hot/Cold aisle selection is set via DIP switch on handle
NOT configured through web interface
Check physical switch position on handle
Step 6: Test and Verify Access
Test Card Access
Present enrolled card to reader
Observe Status LED response:
Green blinking = Lock open (successful)
Red solid = Lock failed (check for obstruction)
Verify Beacon Operation (Page 102)
Normal state: Solid green
Check beacon settings if different color
Remote Test (Page 100-101)
Navigate to: Rack Access Control → Actions → Remote Control
Select handle
Test Lock/Unlock commands
Troubleshooting
1. Card swipe produces no response (no LED activity)
Resolution:
Verify Work Mode is not set to "Keypad Only"
Check handle firmware version in Handle Settings
Ensure handle cable properly connected to PDU
Test with known working card type from compatibility table
Power cycle handle by disconnecting/reconnecting cable
2. Red LED blinks 3 times on card swipe
Resolution:
Card not enrolled in system - check Add Card procedure
Wrong card type - verify compatibility table
Card ID incorrectly entered - retrieve from event log
Card expired (if temporary user) - check expiration settings
Maximum cards (200) reached - remove unused cards
3. Card works on one handle but not the other
Resolution:
Check Aisle Control setting (Hot/Cold Combined vs Standalone)
Verify both handles configured in system
Card automatically works on both sides when added (Page 96)
Check physical DIP switch settings match on both handles
4. Dual Authentication not accepting PIN after card
Resolution:
Must enter PIN within 5 seconds of card swipe (Page 98)
Verify correct PIN assigned to card user
In Keypad Only mode, PINs must be unique (Page 97)
Check PIN length requirements in Keypad Settings
5. Handle shows locked but door won't open
Resolution:
Status LED magenta blinking = mechanical handle lifted from base
Check for physical obstruction in lock mechanism
Red solid = lock open longer than AutoLock time
Verify door sensor alignment if using door monitoring
6. Cannot add new cards - system at limit
Resolution:
Maximum 200 cards per cabinet system
Remove expired temporary users
Delete unused card entries
Export card list for backup before cleanup
7. Lost all card access after power failure
Resolution:
Card data stored in non-volatile memory (Page 109)
Check if factory reset was accidentally performed
Verify PDU didn't lose configuration
Re-import configuration file if available
Check Work Mode didn't revert to default
