Introduction

This diagram shows the serial cable pin out wiring for RJ45-to-DB9 cable.

Purpose

This diagram can be used as reference in making your own RJ45-to-DB9 serial cable for your ES2P PDU.

Requirements

  • DB9 connector (male or female) – This is the 9-pin connector for the serial port.
  • RJ45 connector (male) – This is the 8-pin Ethernet connector used for the cable’s termination.
  • Cat5e or Cat6 cable – This is the twisted pair cable used to connect the DB9 to RJ45. It needs to have 8 wires (typically four twisted pairs of wires inside).
  • Crimping tool – For attaching the RJ45 connectors to the cable.
  • Wire stripper – To strip the insulation off the wires.
  • Soldering iron (optional) – If you want to solder the DB9 connector (some connectors may be soldered, but many are crimped).
  • Multimeter (optional) – To test the cable once it’s assembled.

Procedure

Optionally if you prefer to make your own RJ45-to-DB9 Serial cable, the connections are wired as shown:
