Adding External Battery Pack Capacity to Panduit’s Single-Phase VRLA (Lead Acid) UPS

Introduction

Users of Panduit’s single-phase VRLA (lead acid) UPS can increase their battery runtime by installing additional external battery packs (EBPs). Even with the extra battery packs installed and properly connected, the UPS does not automatically “recognize” the additional capacity.

Purpose

This document describes the process of programming the UPS to recognize the additional EBP battery capacity. The UPS will give accurate runtime estimations once this battery information is set accordingly.

Requirements

The UPS must have an IP address and be reachable via a standard internet browser. For instructions on the network configuration, please visit the user manual for the UPS Network Management Card (NMC).

Procedure for 1-3kVA VRLA UPS

  1. Log on to the UPS web user interface (Web UI), using your existing credentials
  2. Click the Home icon on the dashboard to reveal a sub-menu. Click on “Control and Manage” from the drop-down.

  1. Within this screen, click the Pencil icon next to “Battery Information.” This will reveal a new window.

  1. 1-3kVA VRLA models have internal batteries rated for 9Ah (the pre-
  2. programmed value). Each EBP adds 18Ah of additional capacity. Change the “Battery Capacity (Ah)” fields according to the number of EBPs connected to each UPS. A maximum of four (4) EBPs can be connected. For example:
    1. UPS internal batteries only = 9Ah
    2. UPS (9) + 1 EBP (18)  = 27Ah
    3. UPS (9) + 2 EBP (36) = 45Ah
    4. UPS (9) + 3 EBP (54) = 63Ah
    5. UPS (9) + 4 EBP (72) = 81Ah
  1. The “Number of Batteries” and “Battery Installation Date” may be used for record-keeping, but these variables are not programmatically tied to anything else in the 1-3kVA models.

Procedure for 5-10kVA VRLA UPS

  1. Log on to the UPS web user interface (Web UI), using your existing credentials
  2. Click the Home icon on the dashboard to reveal a sub menu. Click on “Control and Manage” from the drop-down.
  1. Within this screen, click the Pencil icon next to “Battery Information.” This will reveal a new window.

  1. The 5-10kVA VRLA models do not have internal batteries; by default they are shipped with (1) external battery pack.
  2. These UPS use the “Number of Batteries” field to quantify additional battery capacity. Change the “Number of Batteries” to match the number of EBPs connected to each UPS.
  3. The 5-10kVA models can support a maximum of five (5) EBPs.
