Introduction

Procedure to update a PDU using just a USB stick.

 

Purpose

Updating the G5 firmware you may encounter issues using the G5 PDU’s web interface, G5 tools or the PDU might not be on the network. This procedure does not require the use of a laptop or network connection to perform the PDU

upgrade once you have download the firmware and saved it to a USB stick.

This technical note includes a simplified method for updating USB firmware, along with the detailed method.

 

Requirements

Access to the powered on PDU in the rack or cabinet.
Approved USB stick with the required G5 firmware.
 

Procedure

Simplified Procedure


This procedure is verified to work with Toshiba or Sandisk up to 16GB USB Drives. Others USB drives may work as well.
1. Save the target Firmware, ‘Panduit.FW’ to a USB drive.
2. Insert the USB drive into the USB port of the Intelligent Network Controller (iNC).
3. Enter USB mode on the PDU. Press Select Goto Setup>USB>Yes. Select Yes to confirm entering USB mode.
4. Select F/WUp>Yes to upload the new Firmware.
5. The OLED will show the Firmware update progress.
6. When the update is complete, remove the USB.
7. From the USB Menu, select Quit to exit USB mode. Select Yes to confirm exit. The PDU will automatically reboot.
8. To confirm that the Firmware was uploaded successfully, go to Setup>Device>Firmware.
 

Detailed Procedure



1. Press the Scroll button on the PDU front panel multiple times until “USB” is highlighted.
2. Press the Select button on the PDU front panel one or more times until a USB Mode confirmation screen appears.


3. Press the Scroll button on the PDU front panel one or more times until “Yes” is highlighted.
4. Press the Select button on the PDU front panel one or more times until the “USB” Mode Menu displays.
 

5. Optionally press the Scroll button on the PDU front panel one or more times until “F/W Up” is highlighted.
6. Press the Select button on the PDU front pane lone or more times until an “Upload Firmware File” confirmation screen appears.

7. Press the Scroll button on the PDU front panel one or more times until “Yes” is highlighted.
8. Press the Select button on the PDU front panel one or more times until the screen goes dark.
9. The USB Upgrade progress screen should appear within 15 seconds. If the screen stays dark:
• Remove the USB drive from the PDU
• Power Cycle the PDU o Pull the input plug for this PDU only from the power adaptor and reinsert it.
• After the PDU powers up go back to the first step and rerun all the sub-steps for this PDU.

10. Once the USB Upgrade progress screen appears, monitor for the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. It will progress along the bottom of the screen as the FW file get loaded into the PDU


11. If no progress bar appears within 15 seconds or power is lost while the progress bar is in process (Firmware is being updated), then:
• Remove the USB drive from the PDU.
• Power Cycle the PDU .
• Pull the input plug for this PDU only from the power adaptor and reinsert it.
• After the PDU powers up go back to the beginning and rerun all the sub-steps for this PDU.
Once the FW file has been loaded successfully, the display will return to the USB Mode Menu.


12. Remove the USB drive from the PDU front panel.
13. Press the Scroll button on the PDU front panel multiple times until “Quit” is highlighted.
14. Press the Select button on the PDU front panel one or more timed until the “Exit usb mode” confirmation screen appears.

 

Troubleshooting

After initiating the update process, the USB Upgrade progress screen should appear within 15 seconds. If the screen stays dark do the following:
•Remove the USB drive from the PDU.
•Power Cycle the PDU.
•After the PDU powers up, go back to the beginning and rerun all the sub-steps for this PDU.
If the USB stick is not recognized by the PDU then please try another USB from a different manufacturer.
