Introduction

This article explains steps to take if you are unable to communicate with a G5 or G6 PDU across your network. It outlines 2 scenarios, one where the unit is not pingable and the other where the unit is pingable, but there is no SNMP communication.

Purpose

If a Panduit G5 or G6 PDU becomes unreachable, follow these steps to attempt to recover. If these steps fail to recover the unit, please contact systemsupport@panduit.com to raise a support case

Requirements

- Good networking knowledge
- SNMP Knowledge

Procedure

PDU is not pingable

  1. Is the physical connection to the PDU network port good?
  2. Is the PDU controller unit powered up? Do you see anything on the display?
    1. NO – check power to the PDU
    2. Try removing the controller from the PDU and check the ribbon cable for kinks and then reseat the connection to see if the controller come back on.
  3. Reset the controller by pressing the ‘reset’ button on the from panel for less than 8 seconds – this initiates a ‘soft’ reset of the controller, retaining all configuration data.
  4. Does the IP address being pinged match that shown on the PDU OLED screen (under Setup>Network>IP Address)
  5. Check for duplicate IP addresses on the network by removing the network cable from the PDU and checking if that IP now responds to a 'ping' command
  6. Is the PDU running latest firmware? If not, upgrade using the BCT tool or Web GUI (latest firmware versions are available from https://www.panduit.com/en/support/download-center/power-distribution-units.html)
  7. Are there any daisy chained PDUs connected? Remove daisy chained units, reset master and retry ping
  8. Are there any sensors connected? Remove, reset and then retest.
  9. Connect to the network port of the PDU using a directly connected laptop on the same network address range (Full instructions are in Appendix G of the G5 User guide downloadable here https://www.panduit.com/en/support/download-center/power-distribution-units.html)
  10. Are you able to communicate with the unit using the serial port? (see the G5 user guide Appendix H, downloadable from the link above.
  11. If none of the above is successful, Perform a factory reset on the PDU by holding down the ‘reset’ button for >20 seconds. Remove/re-apply power to PDU. NOTE – this will erase all configuration and reset to factory defaults
  12. If the unit still will not communicate, raise a Technical support ticket by emailing systemsupport@panduit.com.

No SNMP communication

If the PDU is pingable across the network, but your SNMP monitoring platform is unable to poll/receive traps from the unit, please check the following:

  1. Ensure that network ports 161 and 162 are fully open between the PDU and monitoring platform, ensure that all network devices have these ports open.
  2. Ensure that the PDU is configured correctly – details are contained in the G5 User manual under Section 3 – available from here  https://www.panduit.com/en/support/download-center/power-distribution-units.html
