Introduction

On certain network setups the G5 PDU can stop communicating after a short time. It has been discovered that if you setup a constant ping to a PDU it might fail to communicate within a minute or you may find you are not able to access the web interface or communicate with the G5 in any way. This issue has been found on networks using layer 3 switches that have been configured to control multicast traffic. Specifically the configuration uses the "ip igmp snooping querier".

Purpose

If you do not need to control multicast traffic this procedure will disable the “ip igmp snooper querier”. You may find the network port the G5 is plugged into  has been disabled by the switch so the process below will also re-enable it.

Requirements

Global configuration access to the network switches.

Procedure

  1. Stop any constant ping to the G5 PDU. This will help prevent the network port the PDU is connected to from becoming disabled while you are performing the steps below.
  2. Establish a connection to the switches CLI either using the serial interface or by using a SSH connection over the network, if you have configured your switch to allow this type of connection.
  3. Login to the switch and the elevate your level to the privileged mode using the EN command and provide the required password if it have been set.
  4. Backup your switch configuration. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ios-nx-os-software/ios-software-releases-122-mainline/46741-backup-config.html
  5. Run the show running-config to view the currently running configuration of the switch.
  6. Look for the command “ip igmp snooping querier” in the configuration.
  7. If it exists, then follow the steps below to disable it if you are not attempting to control multicast packets on the network.
  8. Enter “config t” at the command prompt to enter global configuration mode.
  9. Enter the command “no ip igmp snooping”. Enter command “end” to finish edit if running config.
  10. Repeat this process on any other layer 3 switch between the PDU and monitoring computer.
  11. On the switch connected to the G5 PDU restart the G5 port on the access switch.
  12. From the global configuration prompt on the switch type int <interface identification of the port like “Fa0/1“>
  13. Enter command "shutdown"
  14. Repeat but now use "no shutdown"
  15. Test the constant ping to the G5 PDU and when satisfied it's working save the switch configuration on the switches.
  16. Enter the "wr" command at the Global Configuration prompt. This will save the running-config to the startup-config so the changes will not be lost if the switch is ever rebooted.
