How to configure basic email to cloud based email server on G5/G6 PDUs
This document outlines the instructions on how to configure Panduit G5 Power Distribution Unit (PDU) email notification using cloud-based email server.
Purpose
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) relay setup can be used to configure SMTP on G5 when using a cloud-based email server because cloud email providers require DNS resolution for the SMTP Server Address which is not supported on the G5 PDUs.
Requirements
- Client server administrator privileges
- Panduit G5 PDU web GUI access with administrator privileges
- Cloud-based email connector
Procedure
Add SMTP Relay server feature on a Windows Server
1. Open Server Manager and click 'Add Roles and Features'.
2. Click 'Next'
3. Tick the 'Role-based or Feature-based installation' radio button and then click 'Next'.
4. On Server Selection, click 'Next' as this server has already been chosen by default.
5. On Server Roles, click 'Next' without selecting anything.
6. On Features, check the 'SMTP feature' box.
7. After checking the box, 'Add Roles and Features Wizard' dialog box will appear, click 'Add Features'.
8. Click 'Install' button to confirm selection and close when complete.
9. Once done, open Windows Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager
10. Right-click on the [SMTP Virtual Server #1] and select 'Properties'.
11. If your server has multiple network interfaces and you only want to accept SMTP messages to relay on one of the interfaces, you can select the IP address from the dropdown box. Else, you can leave it as (All Unassigned).
12. If you want to use a different port number other than the default port 25, click 'Advanced' button and click edit on the chosen Address then change the TCP port number.
13. On the Access tab, click 'Relay' and under Relay Restrictions, choose 'All except list below' if you want it open such that any device can send SMTP messages to this server. Alternatively, choose 'Only the list below' and then add the IP address of the G5 PDUs.
14. If you want the PDUs to authenticate to send messages, click 'Authentication' and unselect 'Anonymous. Select 'Basic Authentication'. Else, you may leave it as is.
15. Note that if you choose Basic Authentication, you need to add a local user to the server and indicate the username and password of this account on the PDU settings.
16. Select the Delivery tab and click 'Outbound Security'. This is where you'll input the user configured to authenticate you on the cloud-based email service if you are using that method of security. Choose TLS if the Email server requires it. Else, leave as Anonymous access.
17. Click 'Outbound Connections' and change the TCP port number to the configured port number for connection on the cloud-based email server. This could be one of the standard ports 25, 465, 587, 2525, or any custom port number.
18. Still under Delivery tab, click 'Advanced' button. Then input the mx record of the cloud-based email connector that you have set up such as 'smtp.office365.com'.
Configure the SMTP settings in the G5 PDU web GUI
1. Log in to the G5 web GUI with administrator privileges
2. Click the cog and then choose 'Email Setup'.
3. Click the pencil icon on 'SMTP Account Settings' to edit.
4. Fill in the necessary details. Enter the email server address of the Email Relay Server you just configured.
5. Create a sender email address that you will recognize and help you identify that the email notification is coming from your G5 PDU. It may be that the cloud-based email server will only relay messages from a known email account or only email from the correct domain such as 'Panduit.com'. You will need to check this with your cloud provider.
6. Change the port number as necessary. It needs to match the port number configured on the General Settings of the Relay server.
7. Enter the username and password if you configured your relay server to authenticate users and toggle the 'Server Requires Authentication' option. then click 'Save'.
8. You can test that it's working by sending a test email account you monitor by clicking 'Actions' > Send test email.
9. A confirmation message should show.
10. If you check the PDU event logs, you'll see an entry that the message sending has failed. Please ignore as this is a bug. Monitor your email to see if the test mail has arrived.
11. You can also test using an external email host. You can try WPOven which offers a simple port 25 mailbox.

If you encounter issues wherein the email is not reaching the relay server or the cloud-based email service, please check the firewall if the configured ports are open to receive and send.
